HEPA Vacuums
Did you know that every time you vacuum your house you could actually be risking your health by making your indoor quality worse?
If you suffer from allergies (to dust, pollen, pet hair and dander), asthma, or other respiratory issues, you're constantly in a lose-lose situation when it comes to vacuuming your home, improving your air quality and health. This is because standard vacuum cleaners suck up all the harmful ultra-fine particles from the air, but then releases them back into the room. These harmful particles are then, either absorbed into your bloodstream or inhaled, causing respiratory issues, allergies, heart disease, and increasing the risk of cancer. But all of this can be prevented, and your indoor quality can be approved with the help of a HEPA vacuum cleaner.
What are HEPA vacuums?
HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) vacuums differ from conventional vacuums in that they are capable of trapping extremely small, micron-sized particles. A true HEPA filter can trap 99.97% of all airborne particles larger than 0.3 microns (for reference, an inch contains about 25,000 microns). HEPA works by forcing air through a fine mesh that meets government standards, and trapping harmful particles. HEPA is commonly used in air filters, and now vacuums.
Not all HEPA is the same?
Be aware, not all vacuums advertised as HEPA are the same. There's a difference between True HEPA (also known as sealed HEPA) vacuums, HEPA filter vacuums, and "HEPA-like" vacuums.- A True HEPA vacuum is designed to be tightly sealed, so that all of the air that is drawn into the vacuum is expelled through the filter, and none leaks past it and back into the air. This means that the vacuum in its entirety (the motor, the bag, filter etc) is sealed is designed to meet HEPA standards. These vacuums usually have rubber seals or gaskets around the lid, filter or bag. If you suffer from severe asthma, chronic allergies or respiratory problems, this is the vacuum for you.
- HEPA-filtered vacuums have HEPA filters that trap harmful particles and allergens, instead of recirculating and pushing them back into the air like regular vacuum do. Vacuums with HEPA filters are tested to meet HEPA standards and have a serial number assigned to them.
- HEPA-type filters are NOT HEPA filters. Be aware of marketing terms like “HEPA-type”, “HEPA-like”, “99% HEPA” etc. These terms are used for vacuum filters that are close to, but do not meet HEPA standards.
