How to size a pool cover
Covers are sold by pool size, not by the size of the cover itself. Measure your pool: the diameter for a round pool, or length and width at the widest points for an oval or rectangle. Then choose the cover listed for that size and shape. Winter covers include extra overlap (for example 4 ft on many above-ground covers) to reach over the wall.
Solar covers or winter covers
- Solar covers and blankets are used in season. They float on the water to help hold in heat and cut evaporation. Thicker blankets (7 to 12 mil in this range) are heavier duty.
- Winter covers go on when you close the pool and keep leaves and debris out over the winter.
- Leaf guards sit over a winter cover to catch leaves in the fall.
Closing for a Canadian winter
Close the pool before the first hard freeze, following your equipment maker's winterizing steps. Secure the cover so wind cannot get under it, using water bags on in-ground pools or a cable and winch on above-ground pools, and remove standing water and snow load from the cover when you can.
