What a solar cover does
A solar cover floats on the water while the pool is not in use. It helps hold in heat from the sun and cuts evaporation, so the water stays warmer and you top up and heat less. It is a season cover; for closing the pool, use a winter pool cover.
Finding your size
Covers are listed by pool size and shape. Measure the diameter of a round pool, or the length and width of an oval or rectangle, and choose the matching cover. Solar blankets can be trimmed with scissors for a closer fit around steps or odd shapes.
Thickness
Thickness is measured in mil. Midwest above-ground blankets are 8 mil and its in-ground blankets 12 mil; check each listing for the others. Thicker blankets are heavier and generally more durable. Lay the cover bubble side down on the water.
Liquid solar blankets
Liquid solar blankets, such as the SolarPill and Wave Liquid Solar Blanket, form a thin invisible layer on the water surface to reduce heat loss and evaporation, with nothing to put on or take off.
