Range hood buying guide: width, airflow and venting ▾
Choose the width
Choose a hood at least as wide as your cooktop. Most ranges are 30" wide, which is why 30" hoods are the most common in this collection; 24" hoods suit smaller ranges, condos and apartments. The 21" Broan power pack is an insert for a custom hood enclosure.
Airflow (CFM)
CFM is how much air the blower moves. Hoods here range from about 170 CFM (Reversomatic) to 210 CFM (BU2), 260 CFM (BU3), 300 CFM (Glacier and Sahale) and 450 CFM (chimney hood). Higher CFM clears smoke and steam faster, which helps with frequent high-heat cooking.
Ducted or non-ducted
A ducted hood vents air outside and removes heat, smoke and moisture more effectively. A non-ducted (recirculating) hood filters air through a charcoal filter and returns it to the kitchen. Convertible models, such as the Broan Sahale and chimney hood, can be set up either way. If you run a hood non-ducted, plan to replace the charcoal filter periodically.
Installation
Range hoods need a power connection and, if ducted, an exhaust duct. Have a qualified installer or licensed electrician handle the wiring and ducting.
