Water filter buying guide: choosing the type and finding your model ▾
Which type of water filter do you need?
- Refrigerator water filters sit inside or behind the fridge and feed the water dispenser and ice maker.
- Under sink filters treat the water going to your kitchen faucet or a separate drinking water tap.
- Whole house systems are installed on the main water line and treat the water for the whole home.
- UV systems use a lamp to disinfect water. The lamp and quartz sleeve are replaceable parts.
- Commercial filters protect ice machines, coffee brewers and beverage dispensers.
How to find the right replacement
The model number is usually printed on the cartridge, the housing or in the appliance manual. Search for that number on our site. The same filter often appears under more than one number, so check the product title for the number you have.
How often to replace
As a guideline, fridge water filters are changed about every 6 months. Under sink and whole house cartridges depend on their rated capacity and your water, so follow the interval in the product instructions. UV lamps are commonly replaced once a year. Replace any filter sooner if water flow drops or taste and odour return.
