How to choose an air purifier: portable or whole house ▾
Portable or whole house?
A portable purifier plugs into the wall and cleans the air in one room or open area, and you can move it where you need it. A whole house purifier is installed in the furnace or air handler ductwork and treats the air as the system fan circulates it. Examples here include Fresh-Aire UV and Honeywell AirBRIGHT in-duct UV purifiers and the Amaircare 7500 and 10,000 whole-home HEPA systems.
Size it to the space
Check the coverage area in the product name. The Amaircare Roomaid is rated for up to 300 sq. ft. and the Amaircare 2500 for up to 1300 sq. ft. GeneralAire portable units are listed by airflow (200R up to 200 cfm, 400R up to 400 cfm). A unit rated at or above your room size can run on a lower, quieter speed.
HEPA, carbon or UV
HEPA filters capture fine particles such as dust, pollen and pet dander. Carbon and VOC filters, like those in the Roomaid With VOC, help with odours and gases. UV purifiers treat the air and coil inside the duct but do not trap dust, so keep a good furnace filter in place.
