Whole house humidifier guide: bypass, fan-powered or steam ▾
Bypass humidifiers
Bypass models, such as the Aprilaire 400, 500, 600 and 620 and Honeywell Home bypass units (12 or 17 gallons per day), use the furnace blower to push air through a water panel. They need a bypass duct between the supply and return and run only when the furnace fan is on.
Fan-powered humidifiers
Fan-powered models, like the Aprilaire 700 and 720, the GeneralAire GF4400A (19 gpd) and the Honeywell TrueEASE with fan (18 gallons per day), have their own fan, so no bypass duct is needed and output is higher.
Steam humidifiers
Steam units such as the Aprilaire 800 and 801 (11.5 to 34.6 GPD), the GeneralAire GF5500 and the Honeywell electrode humidifier (11 or 22 gallons per day) make their own steam, so they add moisture even when the furnace is not heating. They need a water line, a drain and a dedicated electrical supply.
Manual or automatic control
Manual models use a humidistat you adjust by hand. Automatic models, and GeneralAire units with an outdoor sensor, adjust the humidity as the outdoor temperature changes, which helps prevent condensation on windows.
Maintenance
Replace the water panel or pad at least once each heating season, or more often with hard water.
