Steam humidifier guide: how they work and choosing one ▾

How a steam humidifier works

A steam humidifier boils water in a canister (cylinder) and sends the steam into your ductwork or, for ductless models like the Aprilaire 866, straight into the room through a fan pack. Because it makes its own steam, its output does not depend on how hot your furnace air is, which makes steam a common choice for heat pumps and high-efficiency furnaces and for larger homes.

Choosing a model

  • Output: listed in gallons per day (GPD). The models here range from 11 GPD (Honeywell Home, 11 GPD setting) to 34.6 GPD (Aprilaire 801 and 866); the Trion CFS20 is 11.5 GPD and the CFS22 23 GPD.
  • Voltage: check what your home supplies. The Trion CFS20 is 115V and the CFS22 is 230V; check each listing for the others.
  • Water: the Aprilaire 800LC is built for low-conductivity water. If you are unsure about your water, ask your installer.

Canisters and maintenance

Steam canisters wear out as minerals build up and need replacing over time; follow the manufacturer's schedule and match the canister to your humidifier model. Steam humidifiers connect to water, drain and electrical supplies, so have them installed by a licensed HVAC technician and electrician.
