GeneralAire humidifier guide: choosing the right type ▾

Flow-through, fan-powered or steam

Flow-through humidifiers run water over a pad and use the furnace blower to carry the moisture into your ducts, draining the unused water. Fan-powered models such as the GF4400A and GF1137L add their own fan, so they do not need a bypass duct. Steam models such as the GF5500 boil water in a replaceable cylinder and can add moisture even when the furnace is not heating. The GF3200PFT and GF4200PFT are listed as water efficient and water saving.

Manual or digital humidistat

A manual humidistat holds the level you set. A digital humidistat with an outdoor sensor lowers the target as it gets colder outside, which helps limit condensation on windows.

Sizing and installation

Check the coverage in the listing, such as up to 2,800 sq. ft. for the GF1042DMD or 19 gpd for the GF4400A. A humidifier needs a water line, a drain and wiring, so have a licensed HVAC technician install it.
