Match the size
Measure your old cartridge or check the housing model. Most cartridges here are standard 10 inch (listed as 9-3/4 or 9-7/8 inches), with 20 inch options such as CU20R20T and a 40 inch AX05-40. The Pentek GAC-20BB (4-1/2" x 20") and DGD-7525 (4.5" x 10") are wider cartridges for larger housings, and the EPM-10 measures 2-7/8" x 9-3/4".
Choose the media and micron rating
- Sediment: Filtertech string wound and AX melt blown polypropylene filters trap particles. A lower micron number catches finer particles.
- Dual gradient: the Pentek DGD-7525 is listed as 75/25 micron, a coarser and a finer stage in one cartridge.
- Carbon: Pentek GAC-10 and GAC-20BB (granular activated carbon) and EP-10 and EPM-10 carbon cartridges, commonly used for taste and odour.
When to replace
Follow your housing or system maker's schedule, and replace the cartridge sooner if water pressure drops noticeably.
