Screen repair guide: mesh, size and spline ▾

Aluminum or fibreglass?

Aluminum screening is stiffer and holds a crisp, flat look but can dent or crease. Fibreglass is flexible, will not dent and is easier to work into the frame, which makes it the common choice for DIY repairs. Black and charcoal mesh are less visible from inside than silver. Micro mesh has a finer weave to help keep out smaller insects.

Choose the right size

Pick a width a few inches larger than the frame opening so you have material to hold and trim. 84-inch pieces suit a single door or a few windows; 25- and 100-foot rolls are better value for whole-house rescreening. The patio door kit is sized 36 x 84 inches.

Match the spline

Spline is the rubber cord that locks the mesh into the frame channel. Measure your old spline or the channel and choose 0.14, 0.16 or 0.19 inch; if the new mesh is thicker than the old, a slightly thinner spline may fit better. Press it in with the wooden spline roller.
