Air Conditioners - Through The Wall
Built-in through-the-wall room air conditioners from Frigidaire and Perfect Aire, 8,000 to 12,000 BTU for rooms of about 350 to 550 sq. ft. Most run on 115V; the Perfect Aire 12,000 BTU with heat is 230V. Some Frigidaire 8,000 BTU models add supplemental heat. Check the sleeve size before you replace a unit.

Start with the wall sleeve
A through-the-wall unit slides into a metal sleeve built into the wall. If you are replacing an old unit, measure the existing sleeve's width, height and depth and compare them with the unit's specifications, since a unit that does not fit the sleeve will not seal properly. New wall openings involve framing and exterior work, so follow the manufacturer's instructions or use a qualified installer.
Capacity and voltage
Choose by the room size in the title: 8,000 BTU for about 350 sq. ft, 10,000 BTU for 450 sq. ft and 12,000 BTU for 550 sq. ft. Check the voltage too. The 115V models plug into a standard outlet, while the 230V Perfect Aire model needs a matching receptacle on a suitable circuit; have a licensed electrician confirm or add it.
