Air conditioner buying guide: type, BTU and voltage ▾
Which type fits your space?
- Window: sits in a standard window that opens up and down.
- Slider casement: a tall, narrow unit for windows that slide sideways or crank open.
- Through-the-wall and built-in: installed in a sleeve in an exterior wall, leaving the window free. Some include electric heat for year-round use.
- Portable: sits on the floor and vents hot air through a hose and window kit. The Perfect Aire spot cooler is for indoor or outdoor work areas.

Portable units are rated for smaller areas at the same BTU, for example 8,500 BTU for up to 150 sq. ft. and 12,000 BTU for up to 300 sq. ft. Sunny rooms and kitchens may need more capacity.
115V or 230V?
Smaller units run on 115V and plug into a standard outlet. Larger units and most models with electric heat are 230V and need a matching 230V outlet and circuit, so check your wiring before you order.
Replacing a wall unit
For through-the-wall or built-in units, measure the existing sleeve. A matching sleeve size makes replacement much easier.
