How to measure and choose a floor register ▾
Measure the duct opening, not the old cover
Register sizes refer to the opening in the floor, not the outside of the faceplate. Lift out the old register and measure the duct opening across its width and length. A register listed as 4" x 10" fits a 4" x 10" opening, and its faceplate is larger so it covers the edges.
Common floor register sizes
In this collection you will find 2" x 10", 2" x 12", 2" x 14", 2-1/4" x 10", 2-1/4" x 12", 2-1/4" x 14", 3" x 10", 4" x 8", 4" x 10", 4" x 12", 4" x 14" and 6" x 12". Narrow 2" and 2-1/4" registers are common in older homes and along baseboards; 4" x 10" and 4" x 12" are common in newer homes.
Louvered or designer?
Louvered registers have an adjustable damper so you can open, close or partly close airflow to a room. Designer registers focus on a low-profile look. The Imperial pop-up 2-in-1 register also works as a deflector to direct air away from furniture or drapes.
Colour and finish
Pick a colour that matches your floor or trim. Most sizes come in white, grey, black, almond and brown, with some in beige, pewter or slate grey.
