Aldes air exchanger guide: choosing an HRV or ERV ▾
HRV or ERV?
Both bring in fresh outdoor air and exhaust stale indoor air while recovering heat from the outgoing air. An ERV also transfers some moisture, so it is often chosen where indoor air gets very dry in winter or humid in summer. An HRV is a common choice in cold climates where homes tend to hold more moisture in winter.
Reading the Aldes model options
- Airflow: listed in cfm; residential models run from 77 cfm on the InspirAIR Compact EK80 to 269 cfm on the E280-SRG, and light commercial models go higher.
- Defrost: recirculation defrost or fan (exhaust) defrost, chosen for your climate and installation.
- Motor: EC motor models are listed separately from PSC motor models.
- Power and layout: on the InspirAIR Compact EK80 range, models ending in -N are hardwired and the others plug in; -M models have a mirrored configuration.
Sizing and installation
The airflow your home needs depends on its size, number of bedrooms and local building code. Have a qualified HVAC or ventilation contractor size, install and balance the unit.
