GeneralAire 4551 FAQs
Is the GeneralAire 4551 the same as the 6FM2025?
Yes. GeneralAire 4551 is the catalogue (GFI) number for the 6FM2025, a MERV 11 media cartridge for 20 x 25 x 5 GeneralAire MAC air cleaners. GeneralAire lists both numbers together on its MAC spec sheet and parts reference, so an old filter marked either 4551 or 6FM2025 takes this same replacement.
Which air cleaners does the GeneralAire 4551 fit?
The GeneralAire 4551 (6FM2025) fits GeneralAire MAC 2000, MAC-L and Perfect Platform air cleaners, according to GeneralAire's MAC spec sheet, and GeneralAire also lists the MAC 3000G and 3000P. Check the model label on your air cleaner cabinet before ordering; the smaller MAC 1400 takes the 16 x 25 x 5 GeneralAire 4541 instead.
What are the actual dimensions of the GeneralAire 4551?
The GeneralAire 4551 is sold as 20 x 25 x 5, and General Filters lists the actual size of this 6FM2025 cartridge as 20 x 24-1/4 x 4-15/16 inches. Because the true depth is just under 5 inches, order it by the part number 4551 or 6FM2025, or by your MAC air cleaner model, rather than by a tape-measure reading.
What is the difference between the GeneralAire 4551 and 4557?
The GeneralAire 4551 and 4557 are both 20 x 25 x 5 cartridges listed on GeneralAire's MAC air cleaner spec sheet; the difference is filtration. The 4551 is the standard MERV 11 filter and the 4557 is MERV 13, so it captures more fine particles. Choose the 4557 only if you want the higher rating for your MAC 2000, MAC-L or Perfect Platform.
What is the difference between the GeneralAire 4551 and 4368?
The GeneralAire 4551 and 4368 are both MERV 11 and sold as 20 x 25 x 5, but they fit different cabinets. The 4551 (6FM2025) fits GeneralAire MAC 2000, MAC-L and Perfect Platform air cleaners, while the 4368 (11-GA100A37) replaces the Honeywell FC100A1037 for Honeywell-style media air cleaners. Match the part number on your old filter.
How often should I replace the GeneralAire 4551?
GeneralAire's MAC installation manual says the 4551 media cartridge normally needs replacing every 4 to 6 months, at the end of each heating or cooling season, but in most homes we recommend replacing it every 3 to 4 months, and sooner with pets, renovation dust or heavy heating and cooling use.
