GeneralAire 4556 FAQs
Is the GeneralAire 4556 the same as the 6FM2020?
Yes. GeneralAire 4556 is the catalogue (GFI) number for the 6FM2020, a MERV 11 media cartridge for the 20 x 20 GeneralAire MAC 2020 air cleaner. GeneralAire lists both numbers together on its MAC spec sheet and parts reference, so an old filter marked either 4556 or 6FM2020 takes this same replacement.
Which air cleaner does the GeneralAire 4556 fit?
The GeneralAire 4556 (6FM2020) is the replacement filter for the GeneralAire MAC 2020 media air cleaner, a 20 x 20 x 7 inline cabinet rated for 1,400 CFM, according to GeneralAire. If your cabinet is a 20 x 25 MAC 2000, MAC-L or Perfect Platform, you need the 20 x 25 x 5 GeneralAire 4551 instead.
What are the actual dimensions of the GeneralAire 4556?
The GeneralAire 4556 is sold as 20 x 20 x 5, and General Filters lists the actual size of this 6FM2020 cartridge as 20 x 20-1/4 x 4-15/16 inches. Because the true depth is just under 5 inches, order it by the part number 4556 or 6FM2020, or by your MAC 2020 model, rather than by a tape-measure reading.
What is the difference between the GeneralAire 4531 and 4556?
The GeneralAire 4531 and 4556 are both 20 x 20 x 5 MAC cartridges, but the 4531 (part 5FM2020) is MERV 10 and the 4556 (part 6FM2020) is MERV 11, according to GeneralAire's MAC parts reference. GeneralAire's current MAC 2020 spec sheet lists the MERV 11 4556 as the replacement filter.
How often should I replace the GeneralAire 4556?
GeneralAire's MAC installation manual says the 4556 media cartridge normally needs replacing every 4 to 6 months, at the end of each heating or cooling season, but in most homes we recommend replacing it every 3 to 4 months, and sooner with pets, renovation dust or heavy heating and cooling use.
