HRV and ERV filter guide: finding the right filter ▾
Find your filter by model number
Look for the model number on the label of your air exchanger, often inside the access door or on the side of the unit, then check the manual for the filter part number. HRV and ERV filters are made for a specific unit and are not sized like furnace filters, so the model or part number is the reliable match. Some Lifebreath filters depend on the core shape: 65-160 is for square core models, while 65-161 and 65-195 are for hexagon core models. Fantech 428549 is listed for the HERO200H and HERO250H.
Choosing a filter grade
Many units can take more than one grade. Lower grades such as MERV 3 and MERV 6 mainly protect the core from dust, MERV 8 adds general dust and pollen capture, and MERV 13 traps finer particles. Use a grade your unit's manufacturer lists for your model, since a denser filter can reduce airflow on some units.
How often to clean or change HRV filters
A common guideline is to clean or change HRV and ERV filters about every 3 months, but check your unit's manual. Some units use washable filters, while pleated MERV-rated filters are replaced. Check them sooner during construction dust or wildfire smoke.
