Kidde CO alarm guide: choosing, placement and replacement ▾
Which Kidde alarm?
- Plug-in: plugs into an outlet, with battery backup; digital display models show the CO level.
- 120V hardwired: replaces an existing hardwired alarm, with a 9V, AA or 10-year backup battery depending on the model.
- Battery operated: mounts anywhere; 10-year models run on a sealed battery for the life of the alarm.
- Smoke and CO combination: one unit covers both hazards. Photoelectric sensors respond well to slow, smouldering fires and ionization sensors to fast, flaming fires. Talking models announce the hazard, and the 3-in-1 model adds a strobe light.
Where to install
Install a CO alarm on every level of the home, including the basement, and near sleeping areas so it can wake you. Follow the placement instructions in the manual and your provincial and local codes.
Test and replace
Test each alarm regularly with the test button. CO sensors wear out: most units need replacing every 7 to 10 years, so check the date printed on the back of the alarm. Hardwired alarms should be installed by a licensed electrician.
