Pool chlorine and shock guide: types, sizes and safe use ▾
Granular chlorine
Granular calcium hypochlorite, such as Wave Later, dissolves quickly and suits regular dosing and top-ups as the label directs. It comes in 450g, 6 kg and 18 kg sizes.
Liquid chlorine
Javelo sodium hypochlorite 12% and Atlantic 12% chlorine bleach are liquid chlorines that mix straight into the water. Liquid chlorine loses strength over time, so buy an amount you will use in the season and store it cool and out of the sun.
Shock and chlorine-free shock
Shock is a larger dose used to clear cloudy water or after heavy use. Choose a shock such as Wave Resolve Pool Shock, or a chlorine-free option such as Wave Oxy Shock or Sani-Marc Shok Ultra, which let swimmers back in sooner. Check the label for your pool type and the wait time before swimming.
Test first and handle safely
Test your water before dosing and follow the label directions for amount and timing. Never mix different chlorine types or mix chlorine with acid, add product to water rather than water to product, and store chemicals sealed, dry and away from children.
