Pool cleaner buying guide: robotic vs suction ▾
Robotic cleaners
Robotic cleaners, such as the Dolphin Nautilus, Polaris VRX iQ and Hayward AquaVac, run on their own motor and plug into a power supply, so they do not rely on your pool pump. They collect debris in their own filter basket, and many models also climb walls and clean the waterline. Cordless models, such as the Dolphin Liberty 300 and Moov InverX, run on a battery.
Suction-side cleaners
Suction cleaners, such as the Pentair Kreepy Krauly and Zodiac Baracuda, connect to your skimmer or suction port and use the pool pump to move. Debris goes to your pump basket and filter, so check both more often while the cleaner is running.
Choosing the right cleaner
- Pool type: the title says in-ground or above-ground for most models; buy the version made for your pool.
- Surface: some models are made for vinyl pools, such as the Hayward PoolVac V-Flex.
- Coverage: decide whether you need floor only, or floor, walls and waterline.
- Spot cleaning: handheld rechargeable vacuums (Vektro) suit spas, steps and small areas.
Care
Empty and rinse the filter basket after each cycle, take a robotic cleaner out of the water when the cycle ends, and store it out of direct sun.
