How to find the right sand filter
If you are replacing an existing filter, start with the model number on the tank label (for example Hayward S244TC or Pentair SD80). Matching the model, or the same tank diameter and valve size, is the simplest way to keep your plumbing and pad layout the same.
Tank size, valve size and mounting
- Tank diameter: filters here range from 16 inch to 36 inch. A larger tank holds more sand and handles more flow.
- Valve size: most units come with a 1.5 inch or 2 inch multiport valve. Match the valve to your plumbing.
- Top mount or side mount: most models are top mount; a few larger units, such as the Pentair Triton C-3, are side mount.
- Above-ground pools: look for systems built for above-ground pools, such as the Polaris Prestige or Hayward S166T with hose adapter.
Sizing to your pool and pump
A sand filter should be rated for at least the flow of your pump and sized for your pool volume. Check the manufacturer's rating for each model, and ask a pool professional if you are changing pump size at the same time.
Backwashing and sand changes
Backwash when the pressure gauge reads about 8 to 10 psi above its clean starting pressure, or as your owner's manual directs. Filter sand wears over time and is typically replaced every few years; follow the manufacturer's guidance for your model.
