Replacing equipment or parts
Match replacements to the model or part number on the old item: the label on a filter tank or pump, or the end cap of a cartridge, such as Pleatco PRB50-IN or Hayward CX225RE. Sand filters are listed by tank diameter, such as the Hayward S180TC (18 inch) and S244TC (24 inch), and pumps by horsepower and voltage. If you are changing the size of a pump or filter, check that they are rated to work together or ask a pool professional.
Chemicals: test first
Test the water before adding anything, then adjust in small steps. Sodium bisulfate (pH minus), sodium bicarbonate (alkalinity increaser), soda ash and shock each change a different reading. Follow the label directions, add chemicals to water one at a time, and never mix chemicals together.
Test reagents
Taylor reagents are sold in refill sizes such as 2oz and 16oz for testing kits that use them. Replace reagents that are old or discoloured, since they can give false readings.
