Test before you treat
Test the water before adding anything, then adjust one reading at a time. Taylor reagents such as R-0004 phenol red, R-0009 sulfuric acid and the cyanuric acid and thiosulfate refills restock drop-test kits; match each refill to the reagent number in your kit's instructions, and replace old or discoloured reagents because they can give false readings.
Balancing and sanitizing
Many pool owners adjust total alkalinity first (sodium bicarbonate or alkalinity increaser), then pH (soda ash raises it, sodium bisulfate pH minus lowers it), then sanitizer, such as Wave Later calcium hypochlorite, 12% liquid chlorine or bromine tablets, with a shock such as Wave Oxy Shock after heavy use. Stabilizer helps protect chlorine from sunlight and calcium chloride raises calcium hardness. Follow the label directions, add products one at a time, never mix chemicals together, and store them dry and apart.
Keeping the pool clean
Skim leaves before they sink, and brush and vacuum regularly.
