Variable speed pump guide: why switch and how to choose ▾

Why variable speed

A single-speed pump always runs flat out. A variable speed pump lets you set lower speeds for everyday filtering and higher speeds only when you need them, for vacuuming, a heater or water features. Running at lower speed generally uses much less electricity and is quieter.

Choosing a pump

  • Horsepower: models here run from 0.85 HP to 3 HP. Match your current pump unless a pool professional advises a different size; bigger is not automatically better.
  • Voltage: many are dual voltage (115/230V or 115/208-230V); some are 208-230V or 230V only. Check what your circuit supplies.
  • Controls: some pumps have built-in controls and some, such as the Jandy VS FloPro listed without a controller or models with OmniX, are set up to work with an automation system. Check each listing.
  • Fit: compare port size and footprint with your existing pump, especially when replacing a different brand.

Have pump wiring and bonding done by a licensed electrician.
