Water filter cartridge guide: size, micron rating and type ▾
Match the size
Cartridges are sold by length and diameter. Most here are 10 or 20 inches long, such as the Viqua C2-01 (10") and C2-02 (20"). A cartridge sold as 10 inch often measures 9-3/4 to 9-7/8 inches, which is normal. Measure your old cartridge or check the housing model before ordering.
Choose the micron rating
The micron number tells you how fine the filter is: a lower number catches finer particles. Options range from 25 micron sediment cartridges (Rainfresh BP25, Viqua CMB-2510-HF) to 5 micron (Viqua AWP110), 1 micron (Rainfresh HP1) and the 0.3 micron Rainfresh RF1S ceramic cartridge. Where two cartridges are used together, the coarser sediment filter usually goes first.
Pick the cartridge type
Sediment cartridges (string wound, melt blown and dual gradient density) trap particles. Carbon block and granular carbon cartridges are used for taste and odour; the Rainfresh CF2-8, for example, is a chlorine taste and odour reduction cartridge. Specialty cartridges include the Rainfresh QCA Twist chloramine filter and QLV Twist lead and VOC filter. Replace cartridges on the schedule in your system's instructions, or sooner if water pressure drops.
