Water filtration system guide: choosing the right type ▾
Whole house, under sink, faucet or countertop
- Whole house systems go on the main water line and treat all the water in the home, for example the GE GXWH40L or Rainfresh FC100.
- Under sink systems filter drinking and cooking water at one tap, such as Rainfresh UC205, Everpure H300 or Moen F9800.
- Faucet filters like the Rainfresh Instapure F5C attach to the tap, and countertop units like the Brondell Cypress sit beside the sink.
Reverse osmosis and UV
Reverse osmosis systems, such as the Rainfresh RO450 and Brondell Circle, reduce more dissolved contaminants than carbon filters alone and usually need a drain connection. UV systems, such as the Rainfresh R519 (5 GPM) and R830, disinfect water with ultraviolet light but do not remove sediment, so they are normally paired with a pre-filter.
Plan for upkeep
Every system needs replacement cartridges or lamps on a schedule. Check the cartridge model and interval before you buy. UV lamps are commonly replaced once a year.
