Grease or charcoal?
Aluminum grease filters trap grease from cooking. Charcoal odour filters absorb smoke and odours, and are needed when the hood or microwave recirculates air instead of venting outside. Many over-the-range microwaves use both.

Cleaning and replacement
Aluminum grease filters can usually be washed in warm, soapy water; check your manual first. Charcoal filters cannot be washed, so replace them on the schedule in your manual, sooner if you cook often.
