Screen repair guide: screening, spline and sizes ▾
Choose the screening
Aluminum screening (silver or black) is stiff and holds its shape. Fibreglass screening (black or charcoal) is softer and easier to work into the frame. Micro mesh has a finer weave, and pet-resistant polyester is made to stand up to claws and paws better than standard mesh.
Pick a width and length
Choose a width a few inches larger than your frame opening so you have material to grip while you roll in the spline, then trim the excess. Pre-cut 84" pieces suit a single window or door; 100' rolls suit several screens or repeat jobs.
Match the spline
Spline is the cord that locks the screening into the frame channel. Titles list the diameter, from 0.140" to 0.200". Measure your old spline or the channel, and choose the same diameter. Foam core spline is softer; vinyl is firmer. A spline roller presses it into the channel.
