Whole-home or portable?
Whole-home dehumidifiers, such as the Aprilaire E-series, Santa-Fe Ultra and Honeywell DHM units, are installed with your HVAC system or in a basement and can dry the whole house. Portable models such as the Santa-Fe Compact70 and Oasis105 or the Frigidaire 22 and 35 pint units sit in one area. Perfect Aire Damp2Dry units are sized for commercial and industrial spaces.
Pick the capacity
Capacity is listed in pints of water removed per day. Higher capacity suits larger or damper spaces. Perfect Aire lists coverage too: 22 pints for 1,500 sq. ft., 35 pints for 3,000 sq. ft. and 50 pints for 4,500 sq. ft. The Aprilaire range:

Drainage and installation
Plan where the water will go. Most whole-home units drain to a floor drain or condensate pump, and some models, like the Perfect Aire Flat Panel with Built-In Pump, include a pump. Ducted installs are usually done by an HVAC contractor.
Keep the filter clean
A clogged filter reduces airflow and performance. Check it on the schedule in your manual and replace it when it is dirty.
